What kind of questions should someone ask who's thinking about hiring a fundraising consultant?

Begin by asking questions of people you know who have hired consultants. Ask them if there are any firms in particular that they would recommend. Almost all of our new business results from the referrals of satisfied clients.

Narrow the field by finding out if they have a good track record with organizations like yours. A consultant should bring expertise, perspective, authenticity, friendship, and accomplishment to the client.

Get to know the prospective consultant through a preliminary in-person visit. Determine if the firm's personality is compatible with your staff, your board, your donors and your constituency.

Be sure to visit with the person who will serve as your account representative.

And of course, compare costs.

James A. Ravanelli & Associates is a proud member of these organizations.
